The Etsha Cooperative is renowned for producing exceptionally crafted baskets available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, including wide-rimmed bowls and lidded hampers that vary from just a few centimeters to nearly a meter in height. Each basket is meticulously woven with an exceptionally tight and smooth finish on both the interior and exterior.
Depending on the complexity of the design and size, a single basket may take several weeks, months, or even years to complete. The artisans use strands of mokola palm, dyed naturally with roots and leaves to produce a palette of earthy browns and terracotta tones. These materials are transformed into intricate geometric and symbolic patterns bearing evocative names such as Forehead of the Zebra, Knees of the Tortoise, and Ribs of the Giraffe.
Traditionally, baskets made by the Hambukushu people were entirely white—the natural hue of dried mokola palm. However, following their settlement in the Okavango Delta, interactions with local weavers and tourists inspired the introduction of the distinctive multi-toned embellishments that now characterize Etsha’s iconic basketry.
